ELDON UNITED CHURCH
The Eldon United Church, which was purchased in the 1920's, had previously been owned by the Baptists. The Masons now own it. As indicated in Marion MacKenzie's report, Eldon United Church had a shared ministry with St. Andrew's, Belle River, from 1928—1944, with the following ministers serving both congregations: Revs. M. D. MacDonald, J. R. Skinner, and Blair MacPhail.
Until its closure in the early 1960's, supply ministers were provided by the Valleyfield and Pownal charges. These ministers included: Rev. John MacKay, Rev. John Sheen, Rev. A. C. Fraser, Rev. Norman Green and Rev. Gouge. Organists during this period were: Mrs. Ethel Larrabee (Austin Larrabee's mother), Gladys Murchison, Mrs. (Joe) Ida Robertson, Mrs. John Sheen. The Eldon United Church organ was donated to the Eldon Legion.
It is interesting to note that Dr. Fortune‘s home in Eldon was the former manse.
Ed Harrington. Horatio (Ash) Cantelo (J. J. Cantelo's father), and William (Billy) Penny all served as janitors of the church.
Elders of the church included: Jim Donald Murchison, Frank Halliday (James Halliday's father), Goldie Frizzell (Russell Frizzell's father), and Donald Neil Murchison (Manson Murchison's father). For several years, Manson Murchison served as Secretary—
Treasurer.
