Pigs have been a common sight on many farms since the early times. There is a considerable difference in the price of pork now, and what it was fifty years ago, when it was only 3¢ a pound dressed weight. Now it is over 50¢ a pound, or a 30 lb. pig sells for about $23.
In earlier years, a pig would be butchered for the winter‘s meat for the farmer's family. This was preserved by salting it in a barrel.
Hams were cured and hung up for future use. Nowa-
days, we pack it in our deep freeze, and miss the flavour of good home cured ham.

Although only a few farmers in our area raise poultry nowadays, a barnyard with hens, geese and ducks was a common sight in years gone by.
