L ^harlottetown 3 yJlded Churches ST . PAUL 'S CHURCH This historic old church of England stands on the east side of facing the Government buildĀ¬ ings and court house. The original St . Paul's (a wooden structure) was erected in 1803 and was the first church building on the Island. The present church, completed in 1868, is one of the more notable land marks of the Island and contains many memorable replicas of the Island's history. ST . JAMES' PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The "Kirk" was erected in 1828 and stands on the corner of and Streets facing northeast. One of the oldest churches on the Island, the building was originally of wood construction but was changed to the present beautiful edifice in 1878. On the walls of the present building may be seen a memorial tablet in memory of Colin N. MacKenzie , M.D. , one of the seven who perished in the wreck of the Fairy Queen in 1853. ST . PETER'S CATHEDRAL Situated in the northwest corner of , St. Peter 's High Church of England was erected in 1879 and consecrated by the Lord ishop of Nova Scotia . In addition to the main building is the exquisite little "Chapel of All Souls" erected in 1888 and adorned by the celeĀ¬ brated paintings of the late Robert Harris , CMA, once president of the Royal Canadian Academy. ST . DUNSTAN 'S BASILICA One of the most beautiful churches in Canada , Roman Catholic Cathedral was erected in 1917, after a conflagration destroyed the previous Cathedral in 1913. The interior of the Basilica is not surpassed for architectural beauty by any similar structure in Eastern Canada . The church is the largest on the Island, taking up the largest portion of the block bounded by Queen, Sydney, Great George and Dorchester Streets.
