SOUTH SHORE MEDICAL & COMMUNITY SERVICES BUILDING
Since 1969 Crapaud and surrounding areas had been without the services of a resident doctor. Several meetings of con- cerned residents were held on how to attract a doctor and other needed services were discussed.
In 1983 a door-to-door survey was done to identify what type of medical services residents most wanted. The majority felt such a facility was needed, and that it Should be built in Crapaud with space for a Medical Doctor, a Dentist, and a Drug Store. In 1984 the Crapaud ratepayers authorized the project and a $97,000. L.E.A.D. Grant was received to proceed
with the project.
As plans were being finalized for the building, which was to be attached to the Village Fire Hall with parking space at the front and rear of the building, it was also decided to have a finished basement which would contain the local Public
Library, a Hair Salon, and a Lawyer's Office.
In January 1985 Dentist, Dr. Alan MacDonald, the first tenant, opened for business. He was followed by Medical Doc- tor, Dr. Hendrick Visser, and the opening of the Drug Store operated by Neila and George Auld. The Library and other professionals also opened for business.
Now, in the year 1991, the top floor is still occupied by
the same professionals and all are doing well. The Crapaud W.I.
maintain the Library in its much improved facility. The group hold their monthly meetings there, and other groups utilize it as well. The Pharmacy Owners now use the office space and a
large storeroom in the basement.
