MACDONALD PRODUCE Boyd MacDonald was born and raised in Crapaud , the son of the late Elmer MacDonald and Mrs. Myrtle Francis , and from the days of his youth, his love and interest in the land began when he worked on his neighbor's farm next door. Boyd married Claire MacEwen of Long Creek in 1957, and they are the parents of four daughters: Nancy - Mrs. Reagh Cousins; Kathy - Mrs. Brian Carragher ; Cindy - Mrs. Eddie Doucette; and Tammy who still resides at home. In 1963 Boyd started in the potato business and formed his Company in 1968. He first began by growing a few acres and storing them in his basement. He now grows 400 acres and has two warehouses and employs 16 people from the Crapaud area—three are employed as his Office Staff; two men care for and train his race horses; the other eleven work in the warehouse and in the fields at harvest time. He now ships potatoes to the U.S ., Ontario , Quebec , Newfoundland and the other Maritime Provinces. Boyd bought his first race horse in 1969. The late Reg MacLure was his driver until 1974 when Boyd obtained his own license. In 1975 he lost his stable and seven race horses in a tragic fire. With the help of friends, the barn was rebuilt and Boyd started buying horses again. On Dec. 22, 1987, he reached his 1000 driving win. He now owns 14 horses and races them around the Maritimes. Boyd has helped put Crapaud on the map with his most success¬ ful Produce business, his many fine race horses, and his driving ability. 58
