Lodge Hall and the downstairs or first floor of the hall was a Community Hall. The second school was sold to Andrew Tuplin at Margate and moved there, to be used as a Carpenters' shop. It was later accidentally burned. School Classes were then held in the Community Hall after the second school was sold to Mr. Tuplin . There was no playground in connection with the hall, so it was mov¬ ed across the road, where the present school stands and a playground was available there. In 1952 that building was sold to the Kensington Co-op and is in use as a feed mill in Kensington . Margate 's fourth school was built and the official opening held in 1952. It is a one room school. Besides government officials attending the opening of the school, was the Chief Superintendent of schools for the province, Malcolm MacKenzie and C. B. Jelly , Inspector of Schools for +his section of the province. The teacher then was Miriam Hickey . This school was built for Grades 1 to 7 inclusive. Grades 1 to 6 now attend Margate school. The earliest school records show that in 1855 there were 51 pupils attending Margate School. There were 21 boys and 30 girls. The School Inspector or Visitor of the Schools report states that "reading is tolerable, with occasional analysis, writing good, arithmetic slow, order good, child¬ ren progressing creditably". The next report for 1856 shows boys attending 45 and girls 29. The teacher was Mr. James Brown . In 1863 the teacher was Miss MacGregor with 41 pupils enrolled. The 1864 report shows 23 boys attending classes and 14 girls. W. H. Buckerfield was the Visitor of Schools. In 1875 with 43 pupils enrolled James W. MacKenzie was the tea¬ cher. The visitor of Schools, Norman A. Stewart reported "This school is in a very satisfactory state." In 1876 with Emily Muttart as Teacher, there were 42 enrolled. Mr. Stewart reported "The teacher seems very anxious to improve the school. Prospects fair. Blackboard, maps, and more suitable seats need¬ ed." The earliest salary record was for 1877 with Helen E. MacNeill as teacher. Her salary was $32.50 from July to December. In 1891 and 1892 the teacher was Hedley Secord . In 1891 the total of money voted was $65.00. School expenses $40.00 and $25.00 for Teach¬ er's Supplement. In 1892 there were 37 boys attending and 42 girls. In 1935 Ernest W. Dunning was Teacher from August to December with salary of $159.00. From January to June 1936 the teacher was Alice Weeks with salary of $277.50. Margate School has had a good record through the years with many fine citizens leaving it's ranks. 19
