PREFACE: In researching the information used in this book it was necessary to search out a variety of sources including: personal letters; newspaper reports and articles; printed sources such as books, pamphlets, and magazines; Diocesan Church Society Annual Reports; Cathedral Annual Reports; Church Registers; and other assorted Cathedral Archive materials. The goal in writing this book was to attempt to transmit to the reader an historic sense of the times in which the people mentioned in this book lived. It was a time in which people took a keen and active participatory interest in church and community affairs. It was a time when written communication was the medium through which thought and knowledge was transferred. People took time to write and to read. Words were carefully chosen. People spoke frankly about their most inner convictions and beliefs. For this reason, and because I do not pretend to have achieved such mastery of the English language as did many of those whom I quote, I have laboured to present as much as possible the conflicts and events of past times in the vernacular of the day. To those readers who might find difficulties with this presentation, I apologize. For those who would have wished to see a more personal congregation history, I leave the challenge to more able hands. I sincerely hope that this book interests those who read it. It would be a great compliment to hear that it inspired or rekindled, in some way, the spiritual life of one reader. Day, 1994. H.M. Peter Westin
