The Rev'd. George W. Hodgson St. Peter's Cathedral Archives The Reverend Mr. Hodgson set about diligently in his work. By the end of 1869 he proudly reported that the number of regular communicants had increased from 15 to 20 when the church first opened, to somewhere between 60 and 70 by the end of the year. He saw this rise in the number of communicants as one of the best tests of the growth of a church. He described the congregation in these words: "The attendance at the various services has been good; particularly so on the Sunday evenings, when the Church is generally well fdled, and there are in every congregation very many who, but for the free system, would probably never have been found worshipping in a Church of England.
