during the winter on a Sunday Afternoon. In addition, Canon Simpson had kindly arranged that his Lay Reader, Mr. W.S. Ayling, would travel to Georgetown once a month during the winter to hold services. Added to the efforts of the Rector, this ensured that Georgetown, Cherry Valley and Souris received fortnightly services throughout the winter.
The Bishop visited Georgetown in June and confirmed a class of nine candidates. Daily Services held there throughout the summer were well attended, as were the Saints’ Days celebrations. The congregation had subscribed for new iron gates for the churchyard and new posts, the money having been ably collected by Miss M. Easton and Miss Hannah Aitken. Mr. W.S. Easton continued his faithful work as Churchwarden, giving his time ungrudgingly "by day and by night". Georgetown exceeded its yearlong apportionment for the D.C.S. meeting all other obligations and financially supporting the D.C.S.
The Rector lived among the parishioners of Cherry Valley for six weeks during the summer, visiting most days. Cherry Valley actually exceeded its D.M.B. apportionment besides making its annual contribution to the D.C.S. and meeting its other obligations for the Bishop’s stipend, Synod expenses and Canonical Ofi‘ertories. There were, however, some discouraging words from the Rector regarding payment and support for his stipend:
The matter of stipend is too much overlooked at Cherry Valley, many only giving the small sums that were given fifty years ago when times were less prosperous. The rector is very grateful to the D. C. S., the WA. of Charlottetown, and various other individual contributors for their help in the matter of stipend, without which the position of a clergyman in this parish would be well nigh unsupportable.‘91
Silver Anniversary Year of the Incumbency of Canon Simpson.
Canon Simpson completed twenty-five years as Incumbent of St. Peter’s Cathedral on December 18th. The congregation celebrated the occasion by presenting Canon Simpson with an address thanking him for his years of leadership and teaching and a piece of silver plate to commemorate the special occasion. During the year the Cathedral building thankfully escaped from what might have been a serious fire as it was caught early. The building needed only minor repairs. The amount assessed to repair the slight fire damage suffered was promptly paid by the agents of the Insurance Companies contracted.
