COLONEL, THE HONORABLE I. L. RALSTON Minister of National Defence Prince County, Prince Edward Island, has the honor to be the electoral seat of Canada's distinguished Minister of National Defence, Colonel, The Honorable I. L. Ralston, P.C., K.C., C.M.G., D.S.O. (with Bar), LLD. At the outbreak of the present war, Colonel Ralston offered his services to Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie King in whatever capacity he might best serve his country. Immediately, he was called by the Prime Minister from a lucrative law practice in Montreal to become Minister of Finance in the Dominion Cabinet; and in Iuly, 1940, was appointed to his present position as Minister of Natonal Defence. No one in Canada is better fitted by ability and experience for this position of grave responsibility. A veteran of the First Great War, Colonel Ralston served overseas as Major with the famous 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders, being twice mentioned in des- patches and receiving the C.M.G. and the D.S.O. (with Bar) for gallant and distinguish ed conduct. After the war, in addition to his private law practice, Colonel Ralston retained his military connections, being gazetted Colonel in 1924. In 1926, he was appointed Minister of National Defence in Mr. King's Cabinet. And in 1930, he was Canada's delegate to the London Naval Conference. Colonel Ralston's distinguished record both in war and peace, his outstanding ability and his confidence-inspiring person— ality all fit him ideally for his present position of high trust. Prince Edward Island is proud that the Minister of National Defence has his seat in Prince County and represents Prince Edward Island in the Federal Cabinet. PREMIER THANE A. The Prince Edward Island Government has established a department known as The Prince Edward Island Travel Bureau, for the purpose of assisting visitors in securing suit- able accommodation and service. I have much pleasure in joining with this depart— ment in bidding you all welcome. Prince Edward Island is justly proud not only of its war record, but of the fact that here in 1864, in our Confederation Chamber in our Province Building was held the meet- ing which led to the formation of Canada. This is why Prince Edward Island is known far and wide as the 'Birthplace of Canada'. Our National Park has been extensively developed and it is of interest to many that the golf course there begins at the old orig inal home of "Anne of Green Gables,” made famous by the noted Prince Edward Island authoress, Lucy Maud Montgomery. Our marvelous beaches With their long stretches of smooth, hard sand, and our warm, salt water, provide keen delight of a most invigorating nature for old and young. The best way to prove our attractions is to visit us and see them for yourself."
