Mill Dam Baltic.
George Beairsto built and operated the first grist mill in The Baltic over 150 years ago. This was operated by water power, for grinding flour and making oatmeal. Duncan Beairsto also worked there for a time; he was the father of Preston Beairsto of Malpeque. George Riley was the next owner; he was the father of John and Grace Riley. He in turn sold it to James Bernard of Irishtown, who settled there and married Janie Bernard of The Baltic. They had a family of eight children. James operated the farm, built a new saw mill, house and barn. The Bernards operated the saw and grist mill, and farmed until about 1916, when they sold and moved to Ken- smgton.
Charles Burt from Sea View was the next owner; he operated the farm and mills for a short time, then moved to Stanhope. The next owner of the house and farm was George 0. Burns, and Frank Hillman purchased the mill property and built a house near the pond where he resided until his death. The V.L.A. took over the farm and James Brander, Alonzo Holmes and John Crozier operated it for short periods.
In 1937, Alexander MacKenzie bought the farm and carried on a far- ming-fishing operation there until his retirement, but he and his wife Edna remained there the rest of their lives. Bruce retained this property. Gordon MacKenzie, of The Baltic, married Cecila Hillman, daughter of Frank Hillman, and operated the mill for a short time until his death at an early age in 1926. Alexander MacKenzie was employed at the mill for a time, then after Gordon MacKenzie’s death Operated the mill for a few years. William
