Darnley . Lemuel (1863-1881). Mary Jane (1867- bour. ) married John Bar- i Daniel Riley , attended Baltic School and P.W.C . where he received his teachers license. He went west and taught school for one year in 1882. Being born of a spirit of challenge and adventure, he walked beside a cart for four hundred miles, finally arriving in Calgary. Parts of the trail he travelled are still in existence and can be seen even today. An interesting account of his arrival, was the loss of his last ten dollars, while washing his shirt in the river his ten dollars floated away before his very own eyes, but his strong character and persevering nature lured him on. From there he went to in 1891, where he worked on a ranch for one year, then moving on to Banff where he opened the first butcher shop in the area under the name of W.R. Hall & Co. He later returned to B.C . where he was joined by his brother William. In 1902 they came back to , Alberta. They homesteaded twelve miles from . The homesteaders fee was ten dollars for 160 acres and after a settler worked his property for three years he was given the title and ownership. William and Daniel both built their homes there, coming east again, only to return with their brides Janetta and Edith. William made his official cow-brand an anchor with a quarter circle, the official horse-brand being a reversed R inside a circle. These brands can be seen today as they have been plated in bronze by Earle Riley , son of John and nephew of William. These were originally made by a blacksmith in 1903 by the name of Billy Twiss. In 1926 Daniel Riley was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister MacKenzie King and became known and remembered as Senator Daniel Riley . GEORGE RILEY George Riley (1862-1933) married Eliza Jane (1869-1902) Cousins, they had three children, John (1893-1973), Harold (1892-1916), Grace (1895- ). George farmed on the all his life after which it was carried on by son John and Grace who resided in Baltic , they were both very neighbourly and hospitable people and active in all community affairs. After John passed away in 1973, Grace went to reside in Charlottetown . William Riley (1865-1919) married Janette Anderson (1876-1970) they resided in for a number of years returning to P.E.I , in 1918 and operated a mixed farming operation on the . Their family were: Bruce, Edith, and Margaret. John MacEachern Riley (1870-1937) married Dora Anderson ( ) and resided in Alberta. There family were: Earle, Calgary; Grace (mrs. Clarence Eliot ) and Elva ( Mrs. Milton Irvine ), both of Edmonton. Bruce Riley , born in Blackie, Alberta in 1912 son of the late William Riley and Janette Anderson Riley of Lot 18. He married Edith Caseley , eldest daughter of the late Heath and Ethel Caseley of Kensington . 78
