A combination of hard work, cooperation, and devotion to the task at hand, had Annandale School ready for its Grand Opening by the fall of 1893. On October 18, 1893, the first meeting was held in the new school. McFarlane's old shop stove was set up in the new school and almost every man in the district was there. William Norton was in the chair and Edwin McFarlane was playing scribe. The first trustees were John Howlett , Edwin McFarlane , and George MacDonald. They voted $15.00 in supplement of the teacher's salary and they voted unlimited funds with which to get the school ready for a teacher. The new school opened on January 14, with eighteen scholars and the school marm was Emily Ayers . Roy Howlett recalled this first teacher and also that the last assign¬ ment every day was writing. The first inspector to Annandale School was George MacCormack . Ap¬ parently he was quite strict and the children had a great fear of him. A local resident, Tommy Banks, told us that after opening, Annandale School won the prize for the best and neatest school in Kings County. It was noted that the teacher, Mr. CO . Howlett, and the pupils had planted flower beds and raised a flag pole. 44
