BRIDGETOWN SCHOOL The early records show that there was a school in Bridgetown in 1861 and the first teacher was R. MacNeil . At first the school was located in the lower part of what is now Lloyd MacLeod's field, then around the turn of the century it was moved to its present site. According to the Bridgetown Women's Institute Books, on March 23, 1927, a meeting was called to discuss the possibility of building a new schoolhouse or remodelling the old one. It was agreed that the best and most approved way of using the Institute funds was to lay a new hardwood floor in the school,, put in seven new windows and later, as more funds were collected, to put in new desks. A new drinking font was also ordered as was a new map of P.E.I. The minutes of the October meeting in 1927 revealed that new desks had been purchased. One goal was reached and these never tiring Institute ladies began work on another. It was decided to order enough sheathing to redo the 46
