BUSINESS DIRECTORY OF THE AREA
The first store in Dundas was started by George MacKenzie who settled there in 1862. He was a native of Scotland. In 1882, Mr. MacKenzie sold his store to John Nicholson. It was later operated by Dan Nicholson. In more recent years Roderick MacKay ran it. The last owner of a store on this property was Paul Kingsbury, who still resides in the house where this store was located. The first store in Bridgetown was started at the mouth of the River just west of the old Matthew and MacLean’s store. This store was jointly owned by Dr. Thomas Clay and Captain Edward Saville. Dr. Clay procured the materials to build the store
and Captain Saville brought in a load of merchandise by ship to stock it in the summer of 1851.
Gustavis Clay ran a store where Clem Campbell’s store presently stands. This store was later dismantled and hauled to Bridgetown in the 1940’s where it serves as part of MacDonald Bros. Forge.
Neil Millar ran a store for a short time in Bridgetown at the same site where Macintyre’s Quik Mart now stands. The building operated presently by Mac- lntyre’s Quik Mart was built by Brian Clay about 1965 and the store was operated by him until 1975. The store was later leased by Albert Hague and then by Bud Compton.
The Millar store was moved across the road from Matthew and MacLean’s and was used as an egg grading station.
