W. BENNETT CAMPBELL

W. Bennett Campbell was born August 27, 1943, son of Wilfred and Edith (Rice) Campbell of Poplar Point. He received his education at Poplar Point School, St. Dunstan’s High School, and St. Dunstan’s University.

A teacher, he was first elected to the RBI. Legislature in the general election of 1970 and re-elected in the general elections of 1974, 1978, and 1979. He was appointed Minister of Education in October, 1972 and remained in that

position until September, 1978. He was Provincial Secretary from May 1974— 76, and Minister of Finance, 1976-79.

Mr. Campbell was elected party leader on the retirement of Hon. Alex B. Campbell in 1978 and served as Premier until May 3, 1979. He was Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition until January 18, 1981.

He left Island politics in 1981 to seek election to the House of Commons. Elected in a by election, he was appointed Minister of Veteran’s Affairs in September, 1981 , and holds this post today.

Married to Shirley (Chaisson) of Bear River, P.E.l., The Campbell family now reside in Cardigan. They have seven children.

Leslie Stewart Hunter was born October 23, 1889, at Dundas, the son of Stewart Hunter and Christina Catherine Hunter.

Mr. Hunter was a farmer and manager of Matthew and MacLean’s Ltd., Bridgetown, Sec—Tree. of the Dundas Dairying Association and President of the

Carry on Canada Corps in the area. Mr. Hunter also served overseas during the Great War.

A candidate in 1921, Mr. Hunter was first elected in the general election of

1923. He was re-elected in 1931 and in 1943 and was a candidate in 1935, 1939, 1947, 1951, 1955, and 1959.

Mr. Hunter never married. He lived in Dundas. 95
