CROSSMAN
Alexander Crossman emigrated to the Island from Scotland and married Sarah Rayner. Their family were Hubert, William A. and Edward. William A. (1852—1924) married Margaret McNeill (1885-1926) of Grand River. Their family were: Amelia - married George Clark. Lived in Mass. all their married life. Family were Oliver, Melvin, Loring and, Stanley. Mr. Clark notable in that he was founder of Ocean Spray Cranberry, and an ammunitions and fireworks Co. Laura - married Professor Beale. They had one son. Maude — married Ned Fraser, lived in Ch’toWn, later moving to Boston area. Family were Jean, Pearl, Eva, Bert,(d), Florence, (d), Herbert, Andrew, Nettie and Robert. Alfred (1874-1897). Ida, married first to Herbert Best of Lot 16. Family were Ernest (married Lisa Clark. They have five children - Mae, Duane, Gordon, Herbie and Frank. Ernest now living in West River, NS) and a daughter Amy, (Mrs. Wedman Bassett), (d). Following the death of Mr. Best she married Frank Sweet from O’Leary. They resided in St. Eleanors. Mae — married Gideon Baker of Mass. Amanda — married Irving Clapp of Weymouth, Mass. They had four sons, David, Russell, Roger .and Merton. Eliza - (1883—1972) married James Skerry of Alberton. Family were Daisy, Eloyse, Mae, Harold, Margaret, Ida, George and Eileen. William W. (1889-1911).
The land cleared by Alexander Crossman later passed to sons William and Hubert. In his later years William moved to United States and sold his part to James Manderson; however, he returned later and bought his brother Hubert’s part, then owned by Arthur MacLaren.
SKERRY
James Skerry, (1879-1953) son of William Skerry of Alberton and his wife, Ellen Ford, formerly of Ellerslie, came to Lot 16in 1898 and married Eliza Crossman (1883—1972) daughter of William Crossman and his wife, Margaret McNeilI, around 1899. They lived for a short time in Alberton, then came to Lot 16 and moved a house to the west side of the Ferry Road on part of the Crossman farm, where they lived until about 1917 when they moved to Tyne Valley. Mr. Skerry came back to Lot 16 in 1935, having purchased the Crossman farm from a brother—in-law, George Clark. Shortly after this he sold the west side of the farm to his son George. Following the death of his father on Feb. 21st, 1972, George owned the land on the Eastern side of the road also, holding this until 1966 when he moved to St. Eleanors, selling the land and home on the west side of the road to Alfred Banks, and the eastern side to Frank MacLaren. George, died May 1976. He was a carpenter and boat builder, having built his own homes, the Manderson home, the Hazel Millar home and many fishing boats which are now in operation around the ISland.
ELiza Skerry lived the latter part of her life in Brookline, Mass. and died
there on April 10th, 1972. 9
