Andrew McCauley in Burntisland, Scotland. He worked in the Sea Mills Flour milla year or two, and in 1850 left with his father—in-law and his brother~in—law William for Prince Edward Island, his wife and two children remaining at'home with her mother, Mrs. Janet Millar in the Kirkton until the following year. In 1851 the McCauley family, with William Millar, left for St. John, N B. and later went to Peoria, Illinois. They lived there a few years and about the Spring of 1858 the McCauley family with five other families and six young men left on a trek across the great prairies for Oregon. This cavalcade consisted of a train of twelve prairie schooners, large strong wagons with wooden sides about three feet or more high, and the tops made of saplings bent into bows and covered with canvas, each drawn by four oxen. Each family had a separate wagon for living in and another with a supply of provisions to last them for six months, the six provision wagons being in charge of the six young men. Their hardships on the trek were many, the land treeless and cooking often done by burning dried buffalo dung. The band started in the Spring or early summer and reached Salem, Willamette Valley, Marion County, Oregon, September 15, 1865. Christian McCauley died leaving ten children.
