HUTCHINSON HISTORY

The first Hutchinson crossed over to P.E.l. from Glasgow, Scotland in 1790. He was married by the Captain of the ship to Elizabeth Byers, who was coming to the Island to be employed as Governess to Governor Pat- terson’s family. Governor Patterson was the first Governor of P.E.l.

The Hutchinsons first lived in Charlottetown; when he died as the result of an injury, his wife returned to England to educate her family. Of this family, two sons, Robert and William, returned about the year 18l2. Robert became the first Mayor of Charlottetown. William came to Lot 16 about 1824, married Mary Ramsay and had a family of six sons and one daughter. Part of the land he owned is still in the family name. Family of William and Mary were Archibald, Donald, Samuel, Robert, James,

William and Emily. Son William (1794—1869) remained in Lot 16, and his son, Robert, married Janet Stavert from Kelvin Grove.

MacLean of Lot 16, and Dale, Stavert, one son, Gary; Chalmers married Alvira Millar of Lot lo. Family are Janet, married Edgar Dennis of Port Hill;

Adel, married John Massey of Charlottetown; Alton and Ross. Edward married Mariorie Rafuse of NS. Had a family of four Jean, Edna, Robert

and Charles. Calvin.

ETTA HUTCHINSON PROPERTY

This is some of the land formerly owned by Thomas Laughlin, who lived in the home for a while, then sold to his brother Peter and his wife Mary Lynch. Their family were Annie, Steve, Edward, Celia, Leta, Peter, Lee, Helen and Emma.

The Laughlins sold the farm to Loman Adams and moved to Belmont. Loman Adams was 0 Cheese and Butter maker for the factory in this District. He married Margaret Forbes from Tyne Valley, and they had one daughter, Belle, living in Summerside.

Mr. Adams sold the farm to George Cotton, who married Dot Mac— Donald. Their family are Robert (Bob), Reginald, Cuyler and Curtis.

George sold the farm to his brother William, and went to Winnipeg to live. William married Sophie MacDonald, of Lot 16. Their family are Belle, Freda, Athol and Glen. They lived here for two years, then moved to Kensington.

Robert Hutchinson bought the property from William Cotton. Rev. Edward and Mrs. Aitken lived in the home for two and a half years until the Manse was built. Roy and Belle MacLean and their family also lived in the home for some time after their house was burned. Chalmers and Alvira
