consolidation in our area completed. From 1962 to 1970, the local school consisted of grades 1 to 8. From the Fall of 1962, when Athena Regional High School was completed, the students of grades 11 and 12 were, for the first time, able to live at home and attend High School. Thomas Hall, B.Sc., B.Ed. was Athena’s first Principal. The Prince County Vocational High School opened on November 26th, 1962, and was completed in the summer of 1963, and Miscouche Regional High School opened in the Fall of 1963, with students from our 'area able to choose from any of those fine schools, and being bussed to classes each day.

TEACHERS

Here are a list of teachers and some history from the early days of our school, from Department of Education Archives and notes by inspectors of the time, then called ’School Visitors’. First mention is 1939, there were 32 pupils, and teacher was John MacKinnon. 1840 - It was decided that holidays be the last 10 days of May, the last 1 1 days of October, Christmas

Day and Good Friday 1841—1842 - John MacKinnon still teacher. The Bible was made a regular and daily school exercise. 1842 ~ The number of schools in Prince County was 39. 1843 Teacher still John MacKinnon. The principal school of District was removed to about a mile from the old locality. 1843 Dubois Smith occupies the old school station alluded to, and the District is thus divided and maintains two schools. 1847 - A note from the Visitor of schools, Edward Blanchard. ”I called to see a female school, taught by Mrs. Muirhead. She was a governess brought out by the James Lyle family in 1932. Her school was in the Lyle home. This is the first school taught by a woman”. 1852 Senior teacher, R. MacDonald. Primary school, Mrs. Muirhead. 1854 The visitor of schools was John Stark. 1856 The first mention of Central Lot 16. 1861 - TeaChers - Lot 16 Western, J. MacKinnon; Lot 16 Central, R. MacDonald; Lot 16 Eastern, John MacDougald. 1862 - Central Lot 16, R. MacDonald. Lower Lot, W. Ramsay; Upper Lot, J. MacKinnon. 1864 - Teacher .Central Lot 16, Charles King. This was year South Wset first mentioned. Teacher was Donald MacDonald. There were 17 boys and 12 girls. 1870 Visitor’s note ”The Central District School is not furnished with either map or blackboard. The trustees are not disposed to take any action in the matter". Teachers were Donald MacKay and Robert McKelvie. 1873 - Flora A. Henry, lst class. 1874 - John MacDonald, 1st class. No school in Lower 16 for 10 years. A large school is in the course of erection and will be ready for May 1st. 1875 - Central Lot 16 school closed. Vacant. 1878 Teacher was Ben Farrow.
