ST. JAMES METHODIST CHURCH (1873-1954)

The Methodist Church was built on land donated by Samuel. Yeo in 1873. The Church blew down in 1874, and was rebuilt in 1881, re-opening

on August 13, 1882 with Rev. J.S. Allen of Summerside officiating. To raise money for renovations before opening, a tea was held and the sum of $250.00 raised. The Church was painted, supplied with carpet, sofa, chandeliers, table, Bible and new Hymn books. A new fence was erected. Mr. John Yeo acted as Steward and Secretary-Treasurer of the Church. He was succeeded as Steward in 1919 by Miss Gretha Yeo. Services were held every second Sunday, and in the early days were very well attended. The Ministers lived in a manse at Bideford, and transportation problems must have been many in those years, coming so far by horses and sleigh in winters and horse and wagon in summers. As well as Lot 16, the Charge included Bideford, Victoria West and Union Corner. The Methodist and

Presbyterian Churches in the District amalgamated in 1921. Rev. F.W._

‘I Sawdon was minister at the time. The Church remained open for Sunday School for a number of years. An occasional Service was held until July 6, 1954. It was then dismantled and hauled away, by Roland Best. Ministers serving this Charge were: 1875-1876 Frederick Freeman; 1876-1878 Henry Penna; 1878-1881 John Goldsmith; 1881-1883 W.E. Johnston; 1883-1886 E.C. Turner; 1886-1889 Edward Bell; 1889-1892 W.J. Clements; 1892-1895 J.A. Estey; 1895-1897 C.H. Monaton; 1897-1901 W.R. Pepper; 1901-1904 AZE. Chapman; 1904-1905 H.F. Ball; 1905-1906 G.N. Somers; 1906-1907 Ernest Styles; 1907-1910 Ernest Weeks; 1919-1914 L.J. Leard; 1914-1918 H.S. Young; 1918-1921 F.W. Sawdon.
