The most popular farm animal in 1860 was still the sheep. John Cairns reported the most sheep in Freetown at fifty head. William Reeves was next with thirty-seven. The second most common farm animal was still the cow and again John Cairns had the most with twenty—six head. He was followed by Charles Reeves and James Jardine, each of whom had twenty cattle. Hogs or swine were the next most common animal and Thomas Reeves reported the most in Freetown with eleven. He was followed closely by John Campbell who reported a total of ten head. The horse was a valuable commodity for tilling the soil, transporting the farm produce to markets and of course taking the family to church. In 1860, there were one hundred and sixty-two horses reported on fifty-nine farms. James Jardine reported the most horses, with six, and was followed by John Burns Sr. and Ralph Schurman, each with five.
