Paul Arsenault Paul Arsenault came to Freetown from Tignish in 1962 and worked for about four years for Elwood Paynter , then he moved to Middleton, and worked for Leslie Hammill , Freetown , for almost nine years. Submitted by Ann Arsenault DAVID HIGGINS AULD On Sept. 4, 1906, Albert Craig Jr. of Freetown , Lot 25, in , sold to David H. Auld of Covehead , Lot 34, in , Merchant, a parcel of land situated lying and, being at Freetown in Lot 25 bounded and described as follows: Bounded on the south by the , on the west by land in possession of John Walker , on the north by lands of Mrs. Robert Schurman and William Moyse , and on the east by the Mill Valley Road, containing by estimation forty acres of land, for the sum of twenty-two hundred dollars of lawful money of Canada . This purchase of land marked the arrival in Freetown of the David Auld branch of the Auld family. In 1909, David Auld bought more land in Freetown . On August 19,1909, Charles D. Taylor sold to David H. Auld of Freetown , Merchant, for the sum of three thousand dollars of lawful money of Canada , seventy-six and one-half acres of land being the lands conveyed by one James Watson to Frederick W. Picketts by deed dated 6 Nov. 1886. This property according to the deed was on the road leading to Johnston's Mills. David Auld was b. in Covehead in 1849, the only child of Francis and Dorothy (Higgins) Auld. Francis Auld was the son of John and Margaret (Millar) Auld. John Auld was born in Ayrshire , Scotland , and had come to P.E.I , in 1770, at the age of five years, with his parents Robert and Jean ( Fissett ) Auld, on the sailing ship Falmouth which landed at near Covehead . On Jan. 22,1878, David Auld m. Elizabeth Cairns , daughter of Robert Cairns Jr. and his wife Isabella (Stewart) Cairns of Lower Freetown . David Auld and his wife Elizabeth lived on the family farm in Covehead , and there their six children were born. Besides running the farm, David Auld travelled over a wide expanse of the central part of the Island selling books. Many of these were religious books and all the others were for the edification of the readers. He also had a store, and when he left Covehead he sold it to P.J. MacDonald who later moved to Charlottetown and there for many years ran a very well known grocery store. The store in Covehead is still functioning and (1982) was operated by Grove MacMillan. 193
