JESSE BAKER Jesse Baker 's father, John Baker (ca 1748-1821) was a blacksmith and a native of Goshen, Penn. came as a Loyalist to Central Bedeque in 1784. The name of his wife is uncertain but was probably Hannah Lewis. They had six sons and two daughters; three of whom lived in Freetown . Jesse Baker was b. 1786 at Central Bedeque and d. 1865. He m. on 10 July 1806, Sarah Schurman , a daughter of William Schurman the Loyalist b. 25 Jan. 1788, at Central Bedeque , and d. Feb. 1866. Sarah and Jesse settled on a farm at the west end of the , south of the Wilmot River in North Bedeque , that was given them in her father's will. Robert Baker b. ca. 1789 and d. 1865; m. Elizabeth Moyse , lived in Freetown and had six children. Mary Baker , one of the daughters, m. Isaac Schurman , son of William the Loyalist in 1807. (See Schurman history.) Of Jesses' family we are concerned with three children, 1. John called Granda , b. 20 Mar. 1808 who m. Mary Lawless , a daughter of Capt. Thomas Lawless on the 26 Sept. 1839. She was b. 1818 in Malpeque and d. in 1903 in Summerside . 2. Penelope who m. William Taylor . She was b. 11 Aug. 1830 (see Taylor history). 3. Mary Ann b. 20 Aug. 1833 who m. Michael Lawless a brother of Mary who m. John ' Granda ' Baker. John ' Granda ' Baker John ' Granda ', grew up in North Bedeque . After he m. Mary, they lived in or near Freetown , but later they moved to Summerside . Most of their children if not all were b. in Freetown . John left farming for carpentry and was in demand around the country for building houses and coffins. Several early houses in Summerside were built by him. They had ten ch., surname Baker. 2a Ellen b. 22 June 1840, d. 1917 in South Freetown . She m. William Burns 9 Apr. 1846. He was b. 10 Dec. 1841, and d. 18 Oct. 1933 in South Freetown . (See Burns history). 2b Richard b. 2 May 1842, went to U.S.A .; n.f.r. 2c Sarah Ann b. 12 Apr. 1844, m. John Wesley Gould . Ch. were all b. in Summerside . 2d John b. 10 Apr. 1846, m. Minnie McElmon and lived in Summerside . He kept a small store and was a carpenter. In 1885 he worked with his cousin George Taylor on the first Exhibition building in Charlottetown . 2e Joseph b. 2 May 1848; d. y. + 2f Joseph b. 2 Jan. 1851, m. Catherine Gillis . 2g Jacob Schurman b. 15 Feb. 1852 was m. lived in Summerside , farmed in Fernwood , and then moved to Boston, Mass. 2h Mary Jane b. 2 Dec. 1852, m. Gaius Sears . Edward Adams . + 2f Joseph Baker Joseph settled on the in South Freetown (code 102) where Elmer Hamilton now lives in 1984. He worked at George Wrights Mill on the Dunk River , now known as Scales Pond Electrical Museum, for over 20 years. He then moved to another farm on the (code 117) where Mrs. Jessie Drummond resides in 1984, and farmed there for the rest of his working days.
