CHARLES BEAIRSTO William Duncan Sr. was the son of William Beairsto and Elizabeth Champion of Spring Valley, one of a family of nine children.

They lived in Mill Valley, in the early 1900s. William Duncan Beairsto was a miller by trade, and in 1906 he moved to Indian River near Tuplins’ Mills. He was an accomplished musician and played the violin. The Beairsto home was a place of many happy gatherings. They had a family of eight, one of whom was James, who was a barber in Kensington for years. He, also, was an accomplished violinist and played for concerts and dances over the years.

Charles Beairsto was the youngest son of William Beairsto (1813-1885) and Elizabeth (Champion) Beairsto (1812-1895). He was b. in Spring Valley 6 Oct. 1853. He m. Lily MacNeill of Spring Valley whose sister Annabelle 111. William Lewis also of Freetown. Lily was b. in 1857.

It is believed that Charles Beairsto came to live in Freetown about 1890 although it is suggested that he was there for a few years before 1890. Land records show that he bought a lot in Freetown village (code 73) in Feb. 1894. Another excerpt states that Charles Beairsto well known Freetown tailor was manager of Colin Wrights tailor shop at Central Bedeque until 1890 when William Callbeck took it over with Mr. Beairsto continuing as manager. It is also recorded that Irene Beairsto was b. in the Baptist parsonage at Central Bedeque on 17 Feb. 1888. It is known that the Beairstos’ lived in Summerside and that their first child, Mary, was born there 20 Nov. 1880. It has been recalled that several residents of Freetown volunteered teams and wagons to move the Beairstos’ back to Freetown from Summerside sometime during 1880-1890 period. Charles Beairsto was not only a tailor but also a cutter, that is, one who could take a persons measurements and cut out the cloth without patterns. Several people worked in the shop at Freetown including John McCourt, Mary Murphy, Mary Ann (Deacon) Lewis, Mrs. Beairsto and later her sons Dwight and Ben. Ben carried on for many years after Mr. Beairsto’s passing. Charles Beairsto was a talented musician and an accomplished violin player. He was choir leader in Freetown Presbyterian Church and for some time started the singing with a tuning fork. He was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years.

Charles resided in Freetown until he passed away 30 Aug. 1935. His wife Lily passed away in 1928. They have five children, surname Beairsto.

He built the home in the village occupied in 1984 by Edgar Reeves. He later sold these interests and moved to BC. They had four children: Ruby, Eva, Marie and Atwood.
