The five girls attended school in Freetown and J.B. Lewis was the only teacher that some of them had while they were attending school. It should be noted that Violet was in demand as a stepdancer when she was attending school. In 1933, there was a programme put on at the Milligan & Morrison Race Track during a race meet when the paper said "Little Miss Bernard " of Freetown was a participant in the step dancing contest. Submitted by Violet Mallett JOY BEST Joy Best leased a block of land on the east side of the Rogers Mill Road, now , in 1858 from Joseph and Benjamin Bradshaw (code 104). In 1871 this land was assigned to David Rogers who had purchased the mills and farm from the estate of George M. Wright in 1870. Mr. Wright farmed and operated the mills until his death. Joy was one of four sons who came out with their parents, Thomas and Maria (Hutchinson) Best, to Westmoreland , on "The Valiant" in 1817. He m. BARLOW BIRD Barlow was b. 30 Apr. 1901, in , N.S. He was the son of John Sidney Bird and Frances Elizabeth (Wotten) Bird. His father owned a General Store in . Barlow m. Hazel Ellen Lewis , dau. of Joseph and Eliza (Taylor) Lewis, of Freetown . Hazel was b. 26 May, 1899, in South Freetown . Hazel was five years old when her mother died of typhoid pneumonia. She was the youngest of three girls. She recalled, with fond memories, the good times she had with her cousins, especially J . B. Lewis . They were fond of music and loved to sing. Hazel could play the piano. She spent a lot of time, in her early life, at the Deacon home with Winnie and Bertie.
