JAMES BURNS James Burns , son of Andrew Burns , b. 1744 in Perthshire, Scotland ; d. c. 1825 in P.E.I. ; m. 20 Oct. 1776, Barbara Stewart . James Burns and his family emigrated to P.E.I , from Perthshire, Scotland and settled in the Bedeque area, sometime before he purchased 1000 ac. of land from John Clark in 1810. The deed of this land reads in part ' James Burns now of , hath been sometime hereto for in the actual possession of said land.' James Burns seems to have been an enterprising individual, although there is very little evidence now of the sawmills, grist mills or woollen mills, which were operated by the Burns family. The slip where boats were launched can still be located to the west of the farm (code 58). The Burns family were adherents of the Presbyterian faith. When they arrived from Scotland, they found that the nearest church was some miles away in Princetown , which was accessible only by a path through the woods.
