JOHN CAMPBELL John Campbell (1819-1883) the ancestor of the Freetown Campbells was born in Lot 16, Prince County,
the son of Donald Campbell 11 and his wife, Jane Murray of North Bedeque, and grandson of Donald Campbell and David Murray, United Empire Loyalists.
Donald II was drowned on his way to church on a Sunday morning leaving a wife and a family of young children. John grew up in the home of his grandfather, David Murray, in North Bedeque. He married on 24 Aug. 1843, his cousin Ann Rix (1820-1895), daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Murray) Rix of North Bedeque. Ben Rix farmed where the Lefurgey’s live (1985).
John and Ann homesteaded, first, part of the John Murray Jr. loyalist grant in Freetown. The buildings were located on the present day Miles farm, across the road from Basil Robbins (1985) code 44. The Murrays sold the 250 acre grant to Richard Hutchinson, on 4 Dec. 1853. Hutchinson sold to James and John Stavert 24 Nov. 1854.
John and family moved to the 250 acres, code 34, occupied (1985) by James Reeves, Elwood Paynter and Lawrence Banman. His son Hugh John related that in 1853 this was forest through which a fire had run a few years previous. There they raised their family of four sons and three daughters and one foster dau. and made their home and cleared the land. He purchased from Charles Binns in 1868 the farm (code 79) across the main road from the homestead. John had also 105 1/2 acres of cedar woods located on the North Junction Road on Lot 12 (see Meacham’s Atlas 1880). He purchased in 1879, the Thomas Hooper farm,
in Birch Hill, Lot 14.
