His Freetown farms were fenced with cedar poles or rails hauled with horses to Freetown. Later the C.N.R. did the hauling.

John d. in 1883, Ann in 1895 and are bur. in North Bedeque Cem. Their family is as follows:

2a Mary b. in Freetown in 1845. n.m. She kept house for her brother Benjamin on the homestead. She d. 21 Dec. 1896 and was bur. in the family plot in North Bedeque.

2b Benjamin b. in Freetown ca. 1848. He inherited the 250 acres homestead. He was involved with the building of the Presbyterian Church in Freetown. Ben d. of pneumonia which he contracted while hauling mussel mud on 21 Feb. 1896. He was bur. in North Bedeque Cem.

+2c Hugh John b. 1849 in Freetown.

2d Adelaide b. in Freetown in 1851. She In. David Jardine, Freetown, and lived on a farm near to her parents. (See J ardine history.)

+2e Albert b. in Freetown, 1854-1912.

2f Margaret Jane b. in 1856. She m. James Mayne of Springfield, Lot 67, a brother of her brother Albert’s wife. They farmed at Springfield and had a family of three sons and two daughters. 1. John; 2. Benjamin; 3. Ellsworth; 4. Annie and 5. Elizabeth.

2g Colin b. in Freetown and d. there at the age of 5 years.

2h Minnie a foster daughter b. 25 Feb. 1872 and grew up on the homestead. She m. 1. Judson Stavert, 2. Mr. Orr and 3. Mr. Navy. They moved to Vancouver. She had a son, Albert Stavert.

+2c Hugh John Campbell

He in. 1875, Jane Ann MacArthur, daughter of Alexander (Abbot) MacArthur of Victoria West. They settled, first, across the road from the homestead. On the land owned 1985 by Robert J. Jardine. (code 79) He built a new house and barn on this property and two children (Mary and Annie) were b. there. He sold this farm to his brother, Albert and moved to Birch Hill, Lot 14 in 1880. He built a new house on the Hooper

farm and later acquired 50 acres where the MacLean gravel pit was located. The remainder of his nine children were b. there. -
