BEDFORD ESTABROOKS

Bedford Estabrooks lived in Lower Freetown on the site of a former shingle mill in a building that was rather unsuitable for Island weather conditions. It was located on a small tributary of the Dunk River (code 58). Mr. Estabrooks lived alone and apparently had very little income and survived by “living off the land”. He apparently resided on this location for over 20 years. The stream is referred to by some as Estabrooks Brook.

Older residents relate that he had a boat and rowed down stream to the bridge at route 1A and moored. Then he would go to the corner store for his necessities.
