He was a son of George Francis and Mary Jane (McDonald) Francis of Westmoreland . The Francis ancestors came from Suffolk , England in 1830 and settled in Gambles Corner . At an early age he went to work in a grist mill and learned his trade as a flour miller. He worked as a young man in Cousins Mill at and met and married Lillie Catherine Duggan b. 20 June 1879 in Spring Valley , she died 22 Aug. 1952 in Freetown . She was a daughter of Jacob and Ellen (Champion) Duggan of Spring Valley . Weston and Catherine ( Katie Duggan ) Francis were married in the Anglican Church in Kensington 2 June 1896. He and a brother-in law Albert Oakes bought the grist and lumber mill on the Dunk River then known as Rogers Mill from David Rogers in 1906 and that spring, he and his family moved to Freetown and bought the farm across from the mill and lived there all their lives. Mr. Oakes didn't like milling and sold his share to John E. Bernard and the partnership of "Francis and Bernard" continued for years until Joseph Monaghan bought the mill to transfer the water power to an electric plant in the 1920's, and Mr. Francis still worked at the plant as long as his health permitted. Social Life at the Dunk River The history of the Dunk River now known as "" would not be complete without a brief mention of the social life in the years of 1906-1930. 277
