ELMER GAUTHIER The first Gauthier to come to Canada was Joseph Nicholas Gauthier. He was b. at Rochefort, France

in 1689. He was educated, a first class citizen, and an able seaman. He arrived at Port Royal in 1711 and later m. Marie Allain. He associated with his father-in-law and became rich. He left Port Royal, went to

Grand Pré, to Beaubassin, to Baie Verte, then to Belair on the North East River in Isle St. Jean. He died there 1 Apr. 1752, age 63. He was the first Gauthier to live on P.E.I.

John Elmer Gauthier, one of his descendants came to Freetown in 1926 where he worked as a farm labourer for John W. Lewis and Austin A. Scales.

He m. Emily May Le Clair of Rusticoville in 19 July, 1933 and made their home in Freetown Village in the former home of Henry Lewis while he worked for Austin A. Scales. Later they moved to the farm house of John W. Lewis. In 1940, Elmer joined the Canadian Army. In 1942 he received an honorable discharge from the Army due to a minor physical disability.

After the War, in 1945 they bought the farm from Alvin Stetson in South Freetown and engaged in farming, growing strawberries, vegetables, and potatoes until 1960, when Elmer’s health failed. May returned to teaching school and taught six years in South Freetown School until 1962.

John Elmer was b. 12 July 1908. Emily May was b. 22 May 1909. Elmer d. 1962 after being plagued with cancer for two years.

Following Elmer’s death, May taught school in Kinkora Elementary School for 10 years and retired in 1972. She moved to Charlottetown in 1975.

Elmer and May (LeClair) Gauthier had five children, surname Gauthier and all b. in Freetown.
