GREENAN Constantine Greenan purchased land in South Freetown along the west side of the Dunk River Road. He also owned land on the west side of the road on the south side of the Dunk River that extended to the at or near Mulligan's Crossing . This land was sold to Mr. Greenan by James and John Stavert who had gained possession of several blocks of land in the Freetown area. Some people in Newton recall that when they went to school a small bridge between Mulligan's Crossing and the Community Centre was known as Constant's bridge. Constantine was m. to Mary Hughes and they had an infant daughter Mary who d. Jan. 1846. In the 1841 census, he is listed as having 2 m. and four single persons in his household. Records reveal that Constantine sold his land south of the Dunk River to Felix Hughes . Older residents of Newton believe that most of his descendants left this area. JAMES GREENAN James Greenan leased land in the south eastern extremity of South Freetown , 20 Feb. 1880 at 80 cts per acre per year, (code 144). He lived in Emerald on the property owned by Loyola Deighan in 1985. One son Francis, known as "Frank the Trapper", was well known in the Emerald-Freetown- Newton area. He m. Nellie Shreenan . They had a family of seven. Frank was a very likeable man, a great visitor and loved to tell stories. His family were: Alden, John, Eugene, Gerald, Margaret, Ethel and Aiden . Aiden 's wife lives in Sherwood in 1985. LEO GREENAN Leo Greenan moved to Freetown from Mermaid in 1965. He was employed at Elwood Paynters for around eight years. He lived in a house on the farm. William Ryan , b. 29 Sept. 1954. 5. Harold Shea , b. 27 June 1958. PATRICK HAMMILL Patrick Hammill came to Freetown in Apr. 1905. He purchased a farm of 130 acs. on the Old (code 126). This farm had been occupied by Henry Taylor and later by John A. Lord . In 1926 Patrick purchased a farm of 126 acs. from Francis McKenna (code 128).
