+211 Austin Hammill Austin Hammill lived on the Old Malpeque Road and took over the 80 acre farm, (part of code 126

and code 121). Austin was a potato inspector with Canada Agriculture for many years being in charge of inspecting potatoes at Freetown Station. They were staunch Roman Catholics and attended St. Malachy’s

Church in Kinkora.

+3c2h Leslie Hammill When Austin Hammill built a new house in Middleton on the Main Road to Borden and moved there

in 1960 Leslie took over the farm (code 126 and code 127) and moved into the home that was occupied by his father. Leslie became a large scale potato grower and purchased several parcels of land in the Freetown area. Leslie and Peggy carried on an extensive farm operation until Leslie passed away in Feb. 1973. Peggy now rents the land and works in Summerside.

Donna was chosen and crowned Miss Teen P.E.I. 1981 at Holland College Summerside Centre on 8th February, 1981. She was representing Three Oaks Senior High School of Summerside. She was the seventeen year old daughter of Peggy and the late Leslie Hammill of Lower Freetown. Each entrant was asked a question by Master of Ceremonies, Loman MacAulay. Miss Hammill was asked “What do you consider yourself as first, a Canadian or an Islander? She said, “she sees herself first as a Canadian and then an Islander. Canada is a wonderful country and it would be a shame to see it break up.

THOMAS HAMILL The Hamills emigrated from County Monaghan, Ireland in 1810 to P.E.I. They moved from Kinkora

to the Drummond Road in Freetown 1901 where they purchased 100 acres of land from Mary Arbing (code

290
