JOHN HUESTIS
John Strang Huestis of Southwest Lot 27, purchased 177 acres of land (code 39, 40 and 43) at Upper Freetown on 28 Apr. 1845. John was born ca. 1819 in Bedeque. He farmed at Freetown and ca. 1855 m. Sarah Elizabeth Allen of Upper Cape, N.B.
John Huestis was postmaster at Freetown in 1857 and 1858. He and his wife farmed at Freetown until
30 Nov. 1858 when they sold their land to Edmund W. Crosby. They then resided at Bedeque, Lot 14 and Lot 27. John Huestis d. 27 Apr. 1905 and Elizabeth d. 18 June 1905 at Albany.

THOMAS PAYNE HUESTIS Thomas Payne Huestis was b. 12 May 1822 in Bedeque. His wife was Hannah Baker, daughter of Robert
and Elizabeth (Moyse) Baker of Freetown. She was b. 11 Dec. 1828 at Freetown and d. 29 Jan. 1887. They were m. 29 June 1847 and began their married life in Freetown where some of their children were b. surname
Huestis.
Later they moved to Summerside. Thomas operated West End Steam Factory where he manufactured seed sowers, and many kinds of wood work. Hannah had a Straw and Felt works on Water St.

In addition to farming, Jim worked as a carpenter and stone mason. He farmed first in Kingston, and later moved to Hampshire. In 1905, he took the "Go—West-Young-Man-Go-West” fever, and settled in Humboldt, Minnesota, USA. He later returned to Hampshire. In the 1920s, he bought a farm in Freetown (code 72) close to the village and near his only daughter, Elsie Lewis, where he built a house.
