CLIFTON MATHESON

Clifton Matheson took his training in telegraphy at the railway station at North Wiltshire where he was born. From North Wiltshire he moved to Kensington where he became Assistant Station Agent. While in Kensington, he m. Jean MacNutt. They moved to Freetown in 1930 where Clifton became the genial station agent. They lived in the house provided for station agents. He also kept some foxes and a few cows.

Clifton was very friendly and fun loving. The station was a great gathering place. Many a prank was played, to the merriment of the bystanders.

Clifton was active in community affairs and gave admirable assistance to the Freetown open air rink, Freetown School and Freetown United Church where the Mathesons were members. Jean was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, and the Birchgrove Womens Institute.

They were a very hospitable couple and visitors were made to feel very welcome in their home.

They moved to Hunter River in 1947, where Clifton was transferred to be station agent. He also worked as a relief train despatcher in Charlottetown.

Clifton retired in 1962. He lived with his daughter Mary for a time, then settled in Charlottetown. Later he suffered a stroke and spent several years in nursing homes, the last year and a half at Riverview Manor, in Montague. He d. at the Kings County Memorial Hospital, 1 Jan. 1973.
