William lived in Freetown where he went to school. He joined the CAD. and served overseas during the Second World War. On his return he was employed at T. Eaton Co. for ten years. He was a security guard at Kmart store in Charlottetown for several years, until he became security manager at the Canadian Tire store. In 1985, he is retired. He and Verna reside in Charlottetown.

William m. Verna Haines, French River. They have three ch. surname Matthews: 1. William Charles b. 13 May 1939. William taught school for 19 years. In 1985 he is Asst. Mgr. of Stedmans store in Souris. He was the organist in Souris R.C. Church for many years. He is single. 2. Betty Maude b. 15 Jan. 1943. She was m. and is now separated. She is a clerk in a book store in Sherwood. 3. John David b. 16 Mar. 1955. He is single, and is a Physical Education Instructor in Charlottetown.

RICHARD AND GEORGE MATTHEWS

Richard got a lease on the hundred acres of land on the Drummond Road in 1871 (code 117). It is believed that he resided here for around seven years when the land was transferred to Richard Heartz and later to J.A. Howard. Richard moved to Freetown from Little York. He was m. to Elizabeth Haycox, Wheatley River.

They had a son, George, who was b. in Little York 12 Mar. 1853. George Matthews had 50 ac. on Drummond Road (code 112) and also 50 ac. (code 133) on the same road, both shown on the 1881 Atlas. He apparently sold these two parcels and bought 20 ac. on the east side of Kinkora Road, north of the North Brook (code 104) along with 21/2 ac. which he purchased from Robert B. Auld (code 105 north) in 1914. He hauled cream to the Dunk River Dairying Co. for several years, was janitor at Freetown Methodist Church, and was the secretary of South Freetown School. When he came to Freetown he was a shoemaker.

George Matthews m. Mary Ellen (Nellie) Robbins. No children. A nephew Arthur Perkins was raised at their home and attended school in South Freetown. George d. 14 Dec. 1940. Nellie d. 25 Oct. 1939. They are both bur. in Freetown United Church Cem.
