m. Felix Curley of Freetown and d. 25 Sept. 1933. (See Curley history.) 4. Thomas b. 8 Feb. 1854 and d. 1875. He was a school teacher. Patrick m. Ellen Murphy and settled on the in Freetown on the north end of his father's farm, (code 92) where he farmed. Patrick and Ellen (Murphy) Murtagh had five ch. surname Murtagh. 2a James Peter b. 1876. He went to U.S . to work. He d. 1916 and is bur. in St. James Cem . Summerfield . 2b Mary Ellen b. 1878. She m. Michael Mullin and lived near Kensington . They had twins, the girl d. in infancy and the boy d. at the age of 10; he was retarded. After her husband's death, Mary moved back to her home in Freetown to care for her sister. She d. at the Sacred Heart Home, Charlottetown , age 94, in 1972. 2c Stephen b. 1880; n.m. He bought the Power farm (code 91) next to his fathers farm. He d. 1918 during a bad flu epidemic. + 2d John Thomas b. 1882; m. Gertrude Moynagh , Tracadie in 1919, and had four children. 2c Emma b. 1884. She was retarded and lived at home. She d. 1928. + 2d John Thomas Murtagh John Thomas farmed on his father's farm. When Stephen d. he got his farm. He and Gertrude resided in Freetown on the all their lives. John Thomas and Gertrude (Moynagh) Murtagh had four sons. 3a 2d Patrick b. 1920; n.m. and is employed with the C.N.R . in Toronto . 3b 2d Edward b. 14 Aug. 1921. He was employed with C.N. Marine in Borden and is now retired and residing in the old home. 3c 2d Gerald b. 14 May 1912 a twin; n.m. and is employed with The Dominion Bureau of Statistics in Ottawa. 3d 2d James Alfred ; a twin who d. July 1923. A point of interest in the Murtagh family is a sort of an heirloom. A China Teapot first owned by Mary Murtagh , Mrs. Felix Curley , of Freetown was to be passed down to the Mary Murtaghs in each generation. The second one to have it was Mary Murtagh who taught school in Saskatchewan . Mrs. Emmett McKenna ( Mary Murtagh ) is the third generation to hold it. It will go next to her niece Mary Linda Murtagh in St. John , N .B. Submitted by Mary McKenna JOHN NICHOLSON John Nicholson was b. in Hartsville on 12 Aug. 1912, the son of Neil and Mary (MacKay) Nicholson. He m. Katie MacLean , widow of the late Spurgeon MacLean , the 19 Feb. 1941. She was the dau. of Hugh and Mary Anne (MacDonald) MacLure of Breadalbane . She was b. 21 June 1905. John worked at home on the farm until he got employment with the Department of Highways in 1938. He remained with the Department for three years. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and remained in the services until he was discharged in 1945. In 1945 he returned to the Department of Highways where he remained until 1948. At this time he accepted employment with a road construction contractor and operated heavy equipment for a number of years. John was one of the supervisors with Matheson and MacMillan Ltd . during the construction of the Albany Exchange on the Trans . In 1969 serious back ailments necessitated his removal from this type of work. He then obtained employment as a Commissioner at the Canadian in Summerside , where he remained until 1972, when he retired. John and Katie moved to Freetown in 1970 when he purchased the house and lot formerly owned by Carmen Paynter in Lower Freetown (code 65). They attend the Presbyterian Church in Freetown . They had two ch: 2a Reginald b. 27 Dec. 1941 in St. Thomas, Ont. He m. Dawna Tuplin in Toronto , Ont. They have no children. 362
