Kensington and the Bank of Nova Scotia before going to Radville, Sask. where he operated a large hardware store, Picketts and Schurman Ltd . They retired in London, Ont. They raised four children. 1. She d. 4 Nov. 1959. + 4c3g2f Jacob Gould Schurman Gould was the most prominent of the descendants of Wm. Schurman, Loyalist , and is one of P.E.Ls most noted sons. At the age of 13 he left the one room school in Freetown to continue his education in Summerside . He won scholarships to Prince of Wales College, Acadia and Dalhousie Universities. The Gilchrist scholarship for study at the University of London, then on to Paris and Edinburgh where in 1878 he was awarded the degree Doctor of Mental and Moral Science and won the Hibbert Travelling Fellowship at that time considered the best in the academic world. This enabled him to study at the Universities of Heidelburg, Berlin , Gottingen and . After teaching at Acadia and Dalhousie, he moved to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and became President . He became deeply involved in Diplomacy and was their Minister and Ambassador to many countries. It is said he would have been considered for nomination for U.S. Presidency had not his Canadian birth disqualified him. To his memory the National Sites and Monuments Board of Canada has erected a cairn in Freetown just west of where his grandnephew Robert D. Schurman now lives. On the bronze plaque is inscribed: Jacob Gould Schurman Educationalist, author and Ambassador Professor at Acadia, Dalhousie and Cornell President of Cornell University (1892-1921) President of the first United States Philippine Commission United States Minister to Greece, Montenegro and China, And Ambassador to Germany.
