Charlottetown . In 1893 he went to Chicago and became a large wholesale and retail grocer along with a real estate agent. They had one daughter Nancy Jane . +4g3g2f Maynard Freeman Schurman Maynard farmed in Freetown until 1888 then managed the Kensington branch of Clark and McFarlane woodworkers and lumber dealers. In 1896 he bought the Kensington business and started the M.F. Schurman Co. Ltd . Major, his brother, left the business and went west. M.F . moved to Summerside and continued as company president until his death. This Schurman organization has developed into one of the largest integrated construction firms in the Maritimes. Maynard Freeman , " M.F . ", was born in Freetown , May 24,1863 and d. 29 June 1952 in Summerside . On 23 May 1894, he m. Sarah Ada Beattie b. 29 July 1870, d. 10 Aug. 1962. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Ada Jane (Schurman) Beattie. There were five children: 1. Enid Pauline , 2. George Wilfred , 3. Lydia Gouldrup , 4. Ethel and 5. Harold Beattie . +4h 3g2f George Wellington was b. 6 July 1867 in Freetown and d. 9 Jan. 1931 in New York City . On 19 Oct. 1898, m. Helen Isobella Munro (1875-1955) daughter of George and Catherine (Forrest) Munro and sister of Gould's wife Barbara. (It is said George Munro from Pictou, N.S. was the first man to produce paperbacks in the U.S .) George was also a brillant student and won many scholarships. He attended Prince of Wales College, Dalhousie and Cornell graduating in law with distinctions and honors. He practiced law in New York and was very active in various judicial systems. There were two daughters, 1. Catherine Forrest , 2. Beatrice Munro . 4d 3 i 2f Sarah Esther , the fourth child of 3 i 2f Alfred Compton and Mary Bremble (Wright) Schurman was b. 22 May 1857 in Wilmot d. 6 Aug. 1924 in North Carleton . m. 3 Apr. 1880 John Helix Pearson (1848-1925). The Pearsons lived part of their married life in South Freetown . There was one child Alice Mary Wright (see Pearson history). WILLIAM SHANNON Norman and Bill moved to Freetown in the latter part of Oct. 1964. The people of Freetown and their neighbors made them feel at home from the very first day. They lived in the place now occupied by Wendell Taylor (code 65). Bill was in the Airforce and was stationed at the C.F.B. Summerside . Bill planted his first garden and kept his first livestock in Freetown . He had cattle, pigs, a horse and a goat housed in a garage that he converted into a barn. They were active in community activities. Norma was an active member of the Birchgrove Women's Institute and assisted with the United Church Sunday School. Bill joined the United Church when they were residing in Freetown . William "Bill" was b. 14 Nov. 1935 at Ont. the son of Charles S. and Marjorie "Gilham" Shannon. He m. Norma McCoul 6 Aug. 1955 at Stadacona, N.S. She was b. 15 Apr. 1935 at Upper Stewiacke, N.S. the daughter of John and Charlotte (Barkhouse), McCoul . They presently, in 1984, own and operate the Petro Canada Station in Upper Stewiacke, N.S. They have three ch. 1. Marjorie b. 30 May 1956 in Halifax Infirmery and m. Gordon Graham 20 July 1974 at Springside, N.S. They now live in Alberta and have two children. 2. William (Jr.) b. 22 May 1959 in Toronto , Ont. He m. Clair Ross 19 Sept. 1979 and have one child. 3. John b. 9 Oct. 1960 at Toronto , and is n.m. Marjorie was in Grade II when they came to Freetown , William (Jr.) and John started to school while they were residing in Freetown . 421
