STANHOPE SANDS OF TIME Pomp, Ceremony, Launch History i By Kathy Jorgen- sen With upwards of 200 people packed into the Stanhope Sands of Time--a community history was launched with much pomp and ceremony. Described as a dream come true by members of the com?? mittee the book is the culmination of 20 years of research and much.hard work, not only by the commit?? tee but by many com?? munity people. On hand for the launching was Ben- net Campbell, Min?? isters of Veterans Afairs who, in his re?? marks, congratulated the committee on their tenacity in the project. Mr. Campbell noted that their are proba?? bly many histories of Island communitites that may never get written because as years go by materials get lost and people pass on making re?? search impossible. The Stanhope Wo?? men's Institute His?? tory Committee, con?? sisting of Thelma Douglas , Beth Ellis, Joyce MacLauchlan , Jean Quick , Marga?? ret Power, Mary Shaw , Margaret Al ?? lan, Edith Marshall , Marjorie MacLauch ?? lan, Evelyn Simpson , and Shirley Lawson , were all on hand , with their husbands, and were introduced during the evening's festivities. HIGHLIGHTS As Evelyn Simp ?? son, editor of the his?? tory, read some ex?? cerpts from the books as young people of the ommunity de- cended the stairs in arb depicting the the Evelyn Simpson , editor of the of Time, re?? ceive a copy from the Manager of Irwin Print , the company that printed the com?? munity history. late 1700's , 1800's, and down through to today's modern garb of golf , soccer and other sports clothing. Also descending the stairs were members of the Boy Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides, Brownwies, and CGIT. In her remarks, Mrs. Simpson notd that help with the his?? tory came from Can?? ada, the , Scot?? land, and Hawaii . GREAT DELIGHT Orlo Jones of the Genealogy Depart?? ment of the P.E.I. Museum and Heri?? tage Foundation was called upon to make some remarks and noted it was with great delight that she shared the evening with the history com?? mittee. "It was a joy to work with the com?? mittee on the Sands of Time," said Mrs. Jones . THE LAUNCHING To officially launch the book Donald Mac - Donald , manager Er- win Print , presented a copy to Mrs. Simp ?? son as numerous cameras flashed to record the memora?? ble event. The cover of the book shows a beauti?? ful colored picture of Stanhope Beach , looking east from , taken by M.E. MacLauch ?? lan. Design and layout was done by Ken Shelton and Cef Pob- joy- CONTENT The book contains a variety ??tf pictures of school children , buildings, houses, mills, weddings and family pictures all with captions. It gives a family history on all families that have lived in Stan?? hope since-the first Scottish settlers ar?? rived on June 8,1770. Histories of corrimu- nity halls and churches as well as the history of the Na?? tional Park are in?? cluding in the 478 page book. Even if you are not formerly from Stan?? hope or have no roots there the Stanhope Sands of Time will make for interesting reading and will be a lovely addition to your library.
