tribute to Ramon (Ray) Carr on the occasion of his 100th birthday on August 24; Ray has been a long-time choir member and a loyal and devoted supporter of the church. The congregation joined in singing "Happy Birthday to Ray"; the service was recorded on tape and the tape given to Ray and his wife Verna to hear and keep. As a small rural community Stanhope feels extremely proud of its two native sons - or rather daughters - who are ordained ministers of the United Church of Canada. Rev. Charlotte Youland photo by S.E. Lawson Rev. Brenda MacLauchlan M.E. MacLauchlan coll. Lillian Charlotte Youland was born on September 11, 1952 to William and Marion (Shaw) Youland of Stanhope . She attended Stanhope Sunday School, later teaching there, and was a member of the C.G.I.T . and of the Stanhope United Church. A student at the University of P. E.I , from 1971 to 1974, she graduated with a B.A . degree in sociology. From 1974 to 1976 she held a teaching post with CUSO in Papua, New Guinea. On her return to Canada , Charlotte enrolled in the Atlantic School of Theology, graduating in 1980 with a Master's degree in Divinity. During the years of study at A.S.T . she served as student supply at Middle Musquodoboit, N.S. A service of Recommendation for Ordination was held for Charlotte and for Marilyn MacDonald on May 18, 1980 in the Stanhope United Church. She was ordained on May 25, 1980 at Sackville, N.B. The Stanhope congregation was honoured to have her deliver the sermon on June 1, 1980 as her first official duty as an ordained minister; this was a service conducted by the Stanhope U.C.W . which began the month-long celebration of the church's 100th anniversary. 76
