In 1962 Bruce wrote Civil Service examinations for Super?? visor Mechanic for the National Parks of Canada ; he won the com?? petition and went to work in May, 1962 for the P.E.I. National Park. In consequence, mechanics were hired for daytime work at the garage: Danny Lamphier, Ernest Bell , and from 1973 to December, 1981, Paul Court ; Danny MacDonald has worked as mechanic since January, 1982. Bruce retired from the in 1983 and is back at the old stand. With the help of the Ellis family over the years, business has grown. Members of this family have gone on to different pro?? fessions, except for one boy still at school who helps in the summer vacation time, when an extra person is hired to help Bruce and Danny . In 1975 the garage was given a new look, as Shell Oil was trying to have all its garages looking the same across the country. Insulated siding was put on, with new steel windows and door in the office; a new mansard roof was constructed and a new Shell sign was put up; the office was done over with panelboard. There have been many changes since 1946, but nothing has changed as much as the price of parts; Beth Ellis has been doing the buying since 1962. Other changes: the price of oil in 1946 was 25$ and 35$ a quart; in 1978 it was $1.15 to $1.45 and up; in 1983 it was $2.45 to $4.00 a litre. The price of gasoline has gone from 36$ a gallon in 1946 to 55$ a litre in 1983. (4.5 litres = 1 gallon). 129
