Community History Kit S.E. Lawson coll.

the basis for the History of the Montgomery Settlers and Others at Stanhope-Covehead—Brackley Point 1770-1970 by Harry Kielly, which was brought out in our bicentennial year. The Institute entered a float in the North Shore Bicentennial parade on that occasion, featuring old-time customs and methods. June 8th, 1970, the 200th anniversary of the landing of the Falmouth settlers, was the wettest day of the year, with pouring rain, and knee-deep mud around the Monument to these settlers, dedicated that day; but our spirits were not dampened.

We have belonged to the P.E.I. Heritage Foundation for some years; this organisation and the Public Archives of P.E.I. have proved very helpful to us in our continued endeavour to collect historical material pertaining to Stanhope. In 1979 this material was organised and entered in the Tweedsmuir History Competition, which in that year was for a “History Kit”. We received tremendous co- operation and support from the Stanhope community in getting this kit of historical data together, and we were extremely pleased and proud when it came first in the provincial competition and went on to win the Tweedsmuir History Trophy from among 12 entries across Canada. The material in the kit, with many additions under the aegis of the Stanh0pe W.I. History Committee, and with the help of a New Horizons grant, forms the basis for this book.
