was decorated with flowers, and streamers in the W.I. colours. A three- tier anniversary cake, decorated in blue and gold, centred the refresh- ment table, with blue and gold candles on either side. There was a continuous slide show of Stanhope Past and Present, and a display of old-time photographs, together with a giant scrap-book illustrating our first 50 years.
The President, Shirley Lawson, welcomed the guests, and gave a brief outline of the half-century’s highlights; she thanked all who had worked to make the evening so successful, including David Thompson and the Dalvay staff. We received messages of congratulation and good wishes from Alpha York and Covehead Road W.I.’s and a beautiful pot of gold Chrysanthemums from West Covehead W.I. together with letters, phone calls and messages from invited guests unable to attend. We were honoured by the presence of our Provincial President, Mrs. Louise MacMillan, who spoke on the Institute’s work and aims; and Mr. Wilson Ross commented on the achievements of the W. I. in the field of education. Mrs. Rankin MacLaine, a former Stanhope teacher, said a few words 1n appreciation of the Institute’ 3 past work for the School; and Harry MacLauchlan spoke in similar vein, offering anyone interested a guided tour of the original Stanhope School, now on his property.
