Cameron of Brackley; she was crowned by Miss P.E.I. of 1969, and the princesses were J o-Ann Deacon and Suzanne Shaw.
A Baby Show and Afternoon Tea on May 30; the champion baby was Wayne Doyle Jr.. This was followed in the evening by a Step Dance and Fiddling Contest.
There was a Pet Parade for the children at 9:30 on the morning of June 6, held on the golf course. The Grand Parade started at 1 pm. from the Parkview Drive-In, with numerous floats, majorettes, Scouts and Guides, horses and ponies, ending at the golf course, which was officially opened by Premier Alex Campbell; the Hon. Lorne Bonnell, Minister of Tourism, hit the first ball.
The memorial cairn to the first settlers was unveiled by His Honour the Lt-Governor J. George MacKay; the chairman for the
occasion was Walter R. Shaw, a former premier.
Altogether it was a great day, and would have been even better if it hadn’t poured rain; however, this didn’t dampen people’s spirits. An interfaith service was held the next day, Sunday, June 7 at the Parkview Drive-In. The service was conducted by the Rev. Donald Campbell of Zion Presbyterian Church; the sermon was by the Rev. J. Fraser MacDonald of the York-Covehead Pastoral Charge, United Church of Canada; the Old Testament lesson was read by the Rev. Leonard MacDonald, retired Roman Catholic pastor of St. Eugene’s Church, Covehead Road and St. Michael’s Church, Corran Ban; the New Testament lesson was read by the Rev. Peter MacDonald of St. Paul’s Anglican Church; and the music was by the Royal Canadian Legion Choir, with organist Mrs. Warren Marshall.
The Bicentennial was also the occasion for the compilation of a History of the Montgomery Settlers by Harry Kielly; this book has been of great assistance to the Stanhope W.I. History Committee in the production of this book.
