MacLauchlan coll. between 16 and 60 to be mustered and be subject to military authority; this Act was amended in 1833, and the P.E.I. Militia formed into companies and regiments. The 4th Queen's County Regiment had its headquarters at Brackley Point and its territory comprised Lots 23, 24, 33, 34 and those parts of Lots 35, 36 and 37 north of the Hillsborough River ; in this unit there were three officers from Stanhope , including Captain David Lawson , grandson of the first David Lawson . Stephen Lawson (1806-1831) was an Ensign in the 9th Battalion of the P.E.I. Regiment . Events such as the American Civil War and the Riel Rebellion caused an upsurge in military activity on the Island. From 1887 to 1895 the No. 6 Company of the Militia , based at Covehead , was commanded by Captain George Alexander of Stanhope , and from 1899 by Captain John R. Allan . Stanhope men such as John Marshall , Malcolm S. Kielly , James W. Shaw and Malcolm Shaw were lieutenants during these years. From this company the 82nd Regiment of Foot was formed. One of the first military men in Stanhope was Francis Alexander , who signed up as a British regular soldier in Belfast , Northern Ireland in 1825, aged 18, and was posted to Halifax and Niagara Falls.
