Siege Battery and was wounded at Death Valley on the Some in 1916. Jimmy MacAulay, now living in Stanhope, joined up at age 15; Malcolm MacAulay, now of Charlottetown, was critically wounded at Ypres in 1916 and reported dead (see the MacAulay History); LeRoy Kielly was killed in this war. Aeneas MacDonald served in the navy in the first war and in the army (Veteran’s Guard) in World War II. Angus Jarvis was in the RBI Light Horse. In the Marshall family, as well as Ernest above, his brother Art and cousins Lawrence and Merrill fought overseas; Merrill was killed in action in 1917. Louis ‘Maye was another veteran of this war, as was G. Herbert Kielly, 105th Infantry.

In the second World War many of our young men, and women, joined the services. In the C.W.A.C. were Miss Laura Cousins and Miss Clara Burt; of the latter’s brothers, Frank Burt was in the Merchant Marine and Leith Burt with the R.C.A. No less than four Myers brothers, Irving, John, Joseph and Alfred were in the army, as were Leland Bernard and Celestin (Sid) Gauthier. Russell Lawson joined up in 1942 and served in Italy and France; Harry MacLeod joined the army the day after the war broke out and served with the 8th Siege Battery in Europe until 1945. Patrick Horgan joined the R.C.N.V.R. in 1941 and served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theatres of war; Leslie McCabe enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R. at age 16. Three MacAulay brothers, Vincent, Joseph and Louis were in the forces; Joseph joined up in 1941 and saw service in the front line in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany; Louis enlisted in the North Nova Regiment in 1939 and saw front line service in Italy, Holland and Germany. Emmett Robison served in the R.C.N.V.R. and his brother Joseph with the R.C.A.F. Brothers John and Allan Misener were in the forces, John with the R.C.A.; he continued in the army during the Korean War. Three MacLauchlan brothers, Gideon, Alvin and Leslie served in the R.C.N.V.R.; Leslie subsequently enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1949, retiring in 1972 with the rank of Major. Bruce Ellis joined the navy in 1940 for an account of his war service see the Ellis family history. George Marshall enlisted on March 8, 1940 with the 8th Battery R.C.A. and served in Sicily and Italy. Robert (Bob) Marshall served in Sicily, was wounded in Italy, served in France and Germany; he re-enlisted and served in the Korean War. He died at Camp Gagetown in 1961. George Simpson joined the R.A.M.C. in 1941 and served in South-east Asia until 1945. We have one young man from Stanhope, Deryck Stewart, currently serving with the Canadian Forces in West Germany, as is Rhodie Warren, who joined the army straight from school.
