Women 's recreational softball was loosely organised in 1975 and has developed into an active four- team league consisting of Covehead , , Brackley and Sherwood . Several attempts were made to set up a minor softball program, the big problems being a lack of available leadership and not enough young people at each particular level to make a satisfactory number of competitive teams. Other sports organised locally include touch football, begun in 1977 with make-up games being played on the front field of the MacLauchlan homestead. A formal league consisting of four teams was set up in 1978, and a successful final game was played for the Cod Bowl Trophy , donated by the North Shore Recreation Commission which helped organise the league. Soccer gained a foot hold in this area in 1978, when Francis Fryters organised and coached a team of boys 12 to 14 years of age. Since then this game has become very popular and there were soon enough children to form their own association. Strong leadership was provided by Harry Kielly in 1979, Jean Harris 1980-81 and John Palmer 1982-83. Soccer's popularity is indicated in the recent registra- 191
