Water was drawn from the mill pond, through a hole in the ice, with buckets which were emptied into a puncheon on a wood-sleigh. When full, the puncheon was hauled to the rink and emptied onto the surface; it took about five puncheons to flood the rink completely, and the pay for one flooding was $1.00. This task was carried out by Ken and Gordon MacMillan for some years, and also by Walter and Gideon Mac?? Lauchlan. Lome MacMillan kept the engine running to produce the lighting, and Orr MacCann minded the nets. In 1939, when Cyril and Eric MacMillan were in charge of the rink operation, Harry and Leslie MacLauchlan shovelled snow for a week at Christmas, and at the end of the week's work, in lieu of cash, each was happy to receive a pass for 10 nights to the rink at 5$ a night. This rink operated until 1940. During the war years, an ice surface was kept cleared on Harold MacDonald 's pond for the use of neighbours. In 1947 and '48 a rink built by Charlie O' Brien was the centre of attraction for this area. In 1949 a Ford car was raffled to raise funds for the construction of a rink which was built that fall on land next to the community hall. $1800 was realised on this lottery and the car was won by a lady from Tignish ; this rink was in action for only three winters.
